Unlikely Teacher, reworked

Image
6x6, water mixable oil on canvas board, 8/31/2015 I decided to add a little more paint to this one today--it just looked so flat to me, so I tried to get a greater feeling of depth in the apple and the cast shadow by adding some darker values.

Colorful Pear

Image
6x6", water mixable oil on board, 8/12/15 I find the color of a pear to be really difficult to catch--and their shapes are so interesting, always all lumpy and lopsided. I took some artistic license and went with a bit of a complementary yellow/violet color scheme with this one. Sometimes I try to make things look just like I see them--not this time. I had some fun with the color :)

Figure Drawing

9x12", pencil on paper, 8/11/2015 It's been about a month since I've been able to get out to figure drawing, so I was feeling a little rusty last night. I really liked this pose--probably not as much as the model liked it, though. Much more pleasant than the usual 2 hour standing pose, I'm sure ;)

Oregon Wildflowers

Image
6x6", water mixable oil on canvas board, 8/10/15 Oh boy, has it ever been hard to find an hour to paint this summer! I'm just counting down the days until my daughter's preschool starts back up in a week and a half!  By some miracle, my baby took a nap at the same time my daughter was happily playing with a friend this afternoon, so I was able to pull out the paints for this quick sketch of these beautiful wildflowers from our Oregon trip :) Happy almost-end-of-summer!

Unlikely Teacher

6x6", water mixable oil on canvas board, 8/7/15 Every time I paint an apple, I realize that there is a tremendous amount to be learned about color, value, and form from these little guys. They are great teachers, so I'm just gonna keep on painting them.

Buffalo Crossing, again :)

Image
12x12", water mixable oil on board, 8/6/15 I painted this same scene last December on a smaller scale, but decided to paint it again as a gift for my Great Grandpa Curly, who turns 100 this September. I hear tell that when my great uncle Larry took Curly to Yellowstone not too long ago, Curly jumped out of the car to be in the middle of a herd of buffalo and just about gave poor Larry a heart attack. Well, when being in a herd of buffalo is on your bucket list and you're nearly 100 years old, why not? On another note, Grandpa Curly and my grandma Frances used to paint together. They would video record the Bob Ross show on PBS and send us copies of the VHS tapes to watch. Thank you, Curly for being a part of instilling a love of painting in me from early on, and happy 100th birthday to you!
